Dog Owners’ Guide to Grosse Pointe Woods: New Park Passes, Fees, and Walking Zones

Residents of Grosse Pointe Woods and their four-legged friends are celebrating a major win with the opening of the Mack Avenue Dog Park. This new off-leash facility complements the existing Lake Front Park Dog Park, forming a convenient dual-location system for local pet owners and expanding access to public spaces for dogs across the city.

Dual Dog Park Locations in Grosse Pointe Woods

1. Mack Avenue Dog Park

  • Location: West side of Mack Avenue

  • Between: Robert E. Novitke Municipal Center and Torrey Road parking lot

  • Highlights: Central, accessible location—perfect for combining dog playtime with city errands.

2. Lake Front Park Dog Park

  • Location: Along Jefferson Avenue within Lake Front Park

  • Nearby Landmarks: Milk River and the Ford property

  • Highlights: Waterfront views, scenic play area for dogs, and now, expanded access for leashed walks.

Dog Park Pass Program: What You Need to Know

To access either park, Grosse Pointe Woods requires residents to obtain a dog park pass through the Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center.

Pass Details:

  • New Pass: $50 per household

  • Renewal: $40 per household

  • Expiration: All passes expire February 28 annually (regardless of purchase date)

  • Dog Limit: Register up to 3 dogs per household; only 2 dogs per adult allowed during park visits

Eligibility Requirements for a Dog Park Pass

To ensure safety and cleanliness, the city has implemented the following requirements:

Dog Requirements:

  • Current Grosse Pointe Woods Dog License

  • Vaccinations Required:
    • Rabies

    • DHLPP

    • Bordetella

  • Minimum Age: Dogs must be at least 4 months old

Owner Requirements:

  • Proof of Homeowner’s Liability Insurance

    • Minimum coverage: $100,000

    • Must include protection against damages/injuries caused by pets

  • Agreement to park rules for both locations

New Policy: Leashed Dogs Now Allowed Throughout Lake Front Park

One of the most exciting upgrades to the city’s pet policy: pass holders may now walk their leashed dogs throughout Lake Front Park—not just within the designated dog park.

This change:

  • Makes Lake Front Park a more inclusive destination for families and their pets

  • Allows for scenic walking experiences along the waterfront

  • Enhances the overall value of the dog park pass for local residents

Grosse Pointe Woods: A More Pet-Friendly Community

With the opening of the Mack Avenue Dog Park and expanded access at Lake Front Park, Grosse Pointe Woods strengthens its reputation as a welcoming, pet-conscious suburb. The thoughtful combination of:

  • Dual-location dog access

  • Improved walking privileges

  • Affordable passes with strong safety standards

makes the city’s dog park system a standout example of community-oriented planning.
